Synopsis: A thirty-something male, Timothy (Eckhart), is living the good life. He has an attractive girlfriend, Eveanna (Gyllenhaal), and an amazing job at a prestigious law firm. On the night of the couple's two-year reunion, Timothy and Eveanna go out for dinner. However, the meal doesn't go as planned. After ordering the drinks from a vivacious and energetic waitress (Hudson), Eveanna breaks the news to Timothy that she has met another man, or more appropriately, another boy. Then, she excuses herself from the table to make a phone call. In a heartless decision, Eveanna invites her new boyfriend (Fugit), to eat with them. Timothy is a very composed man and hardly causes a scene. He does not act with passion and vigor, like the way that he does when he is in the courtroom. As the meal ends, Eveanna and her new boy leave together. Timothy, however, remains in the booth, confused and lonely. The waitress, Sara, returns to the table with Timothy's credit card, which was used to pay for everyone's dinner. She invites herself to sit with him. Sara and Timothy prove to have an irresistible chemistry. Sara, done with work for the night, invites Timothy to go out for coffee. She is denied. Timothy leaves without saying good-bye to the beautiful waitress. When he returns to his up-scale condo, Timothy goes to sleep. When he wakes up, all he can think about is the waitress, Sara. Timothy has completely forgotten about Eveanna and her young man. He attends work, and talks to his lawyer buddy (Stewart). His friend, Patrick, is very superficial and disregards Sara due to her job as a waitress. Sara too has to work that day and talks to a fellow waitress, Lisa (Deschanel). Lisa purposely gives Sara terrible advice about Timothy, because Lisa in fact has a crush on Sara. Timothy returns to the restaurant in order to court Sara. The pair begin a relationship. Unfortunately they have to deal with set-backs, which include Lisa and Patrick. Also, Timothy's mother (Weaver) is completely depressed that things with Eveanna didn't work out and refuses to accept Sara. Timothy's father (Williams) isn't much help either. The dad is only focused on Sara's outside appearance, and he makes advances on her. Sara's mother (Clarkson) is all for the relationship, solely because she wants her daughter to marry a lawyer and have money. Sara's father had passed and left everything to her mother. The mom wanted her daughter to have the same luxury some day. Will Timothy and Sara end up happily ever after, or are their families, friends, and social status enough to keep them apart?

What the press would say:

Cameron Crowe does it again. The Lawyer and The Waitress tops his previous films, including Almost Famous, Vanilla Sky, and Jerry Maguire. This film is what Elizabethtown could have been. The Lawyer and The Waitress is darkly funny, extremely unique, and greatly acted. Kate Hudson gives her best performance since Almost Famous. She should not only be nominated for an Oscar, but also win this time. Aaron Eckhart, coming off of Thank You For Smoking, delivers another knockout performance. He performs best in dark comedies. Sigourney Weaver proved that she could be comedic in Heartbreakers, but here she takes it to another level. Robin Williams returns to his roots in a smart and distinctive role. He is hilarious, without needing to be extremely physical, such as in RV. Williams won't be forgotten come Oscar time. Maggie Gyllenhaal and Patrick Fugit are brilliant in their short amount of screen time. Jon Stewart and Zooey Deschanel provide most of the laughs. Patricia Clarkson is as good as ever. This is a movie that is not only funny, but has a lot of heart. The Lawyer and The Waitress is about finding yourself and love, and dealing with yourself and your status in a relationship. Cameron Crowe wrote another impeccable and witty screenplay. His direction is top-notch. An amazing soundtrack evokes emotion throughout the film. The Lawyer and The Waitress is not just a romantic comedy, it is a film with substance. It is the best picture of the year!
